North Port is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, positioned on the state's Gulf Coast roughly midway between Tampa and Fort Myers. With about 100,000 residents and a land area of more than 100 square miles, it is the largest city in Sarasota County by geography, and one of the larger municipalities on Florida's southwest coast. The city was incorporated in 1959, developed from the ranchland and pine flatwoods of the former North Port Charlotte subdivision, and its growth has been shaped by the arrival of Interstate 75 and, more recently, by large planned communities. North Port is distinctive among Florida Gulf Coast cities for its scale and its mix of natural and master-planned landscapes. Business parks along the I-75 corridor and a growing base of retail and services add to a diversifying local economy.
